Fernando Torres

Name: Fernando Torres
Nationality: Spanish
Position: Striker
Former Clubs: Atletico Madrid
D.O.B: 20/03/1984
Squad Number: 9

Fernando Torres arrived at The Bridge in 2011 after a 50 million pound move from Premier League rivals Liverpool. His move was surrounded by a huge expectation from the Chelsea supporters. He received the number 9 jersey, which hadn’t been wore since Hernan Crespo in the 2005/06 season.

Torres’ got off to a slow start in his career as a Blue. The Spaniard took 14 games before he eventually found the back of the net. A goal coming against West Ham at The Bridge. However, that was to be his only goal for the club in his first season. This season Torres started brightly. An impressive display on the opening day of the season was only lacking a goal. He then got his goal as The Blues visited Old Trafford. Torres scored in the 3-1 defeat but that will not be the event that the striker will remember from the match. He will not remember his distinctive flick over the head of United keeper, David De Gea, but instead for his miss after rounding the keeper and firing wide in the dying stages. Torres was quick to bounce back and scored in Chelsea’s game against Swansea.

The striker looks dangerous the more he plays and we all hope he can get confidence and start firing again.

Before joining Liverpool aged 23 he had spend 12 years with Atletico Madrid, a club based only a few miles from his home town. In his time at Atletico, ‘El Nino’ (The Kid – his nickname in Spain) was the club’s youngest player as well as being their youngest captain. He made his debut aged 17 and he took the captains armband only two years later. At under 16 and 19 levels he was top scorer for his country.

The Spaniard also headed to the 2010 World Cup after securing a European Championship medal two years earlier; this was his country’s first piece of silverware since 1964. He also featured in the World Cup Final for Spain after coming on as a substitute in extra-time. He helped his country win the biggest competition in the world.
